Being a dog owner means a lot more than carrying for your dog. One of the many aspects of being a dog owner is to look after not only their physical health but their mental health as well.
Thus, keeping your dog healthy and happy should be a joint priority. While there are many ways to keep a dog physically in shape, we’re also going to take a look at some of the ways to keep them happy.
You’ll quickly notice that most of the examples stride towards a common goal. So with all that said, let’s jump straight in.
Give Them Plenty of Exercises
Dogs must be kept in perfect shape. Exercise is seen by many canine experts as a necessity. While canines naturally love exercise, you’d be surprised to find out how much it impacts their mental health as well.
Dog exercises range from walks to full-out agility training. The type of exercise doesn’t matter to the dog as they view it as the same thing. But whereas your dog might not be fully aware of the benefits of some exercises, you should be made aware instead.
Daily walks are considered a necessity. Every canine needs at least two to three daily walks to help keep them happy and mentally in check. A dog that doesn’t get enough walks in the park will end up being sad and miserable.
So don’t make the obvious mistake and instead look after their mental and physical health by giving them plenty of exercises.
Keep Them Busy With New Things
Dogs are naturally very curious creatures. They are man’s best friend because they will follow you to the ends of the Earth. But it’s safe to say that we’re seeing a concerning trend with older dog owners.
The best way to keep your canine happy is to always keep them busy with new things. While canines can get attached to a certain activity or perhaps even a toy, you should go out of your way and try to introduce new things in their life.
This could be a new person, a new friend, a new toy, and even a new activity or trick to do. This naturally stimulates their mind and puts them in a positive frame of mind.
Don’t be afraid to try out new things with your canine as it will ultimately lead towards a better and brighter future.
Certain pets require regular care. Unlike dogs, cats don’t fall in this group as they do a pretty good job of taking care of their hygiene.
But dogs are a different kind of animal to cats. They’re not as agile as cats and thus can’t clean themselves as cats do. So one way to keep them happy is to regularly look after their hygiene needs. Baths are best for this and certain canines love it. If your dog is having a hard time adjusting to it, then you will need to slowly introduce it. But baths are great for also removing fleas and ticks. And if we know anything about fleas and ticks is the fact that they can cause massive allergic reactions.
Regular care doesn’t only mean regular bath time. Food is an important aspect of a canine’s life. Food directly impacts a canine’s health. Feeding them unhealthy foods can cause all sorts of problems. For starters, sugary foods can seriously harm canines. This is why you should avoid giving your companion lots of processed foods.
Instead of an unhealthy diet, focus on giving them healthy foods as it can oftentimes make a huge difference.
Give Them Your Unconditional Love and Affection
Dogs are wonderful creatures that devote their entire lives to us. It is said that one can replace a dog’s love and affection towards its human. And for most parts, this is absolutely true.
The best part of being a dog owner is having someone by your side at all times. But our companions also need the same love and affection they give us. While that might be hard, seeing as we have things to do throughout the day, you should try and love your dog more.
This will have an ultimate impact on their health; both physical and mental. A happy dog is a dog that sees you coming back from work, going to the park, playing fetch, etc.
All these activities create a bond between the owner and the canine. But it’s sometimes the little things that can have massive impacts on their health. Yeah, dog walks are one thing, but they’re a routine and your dog also sees it as that.
What you should do instead is maybe cuddle on the couch from time to time and watch a movie together. It’s the small things that can really count.
If you’re not prepared to do that, then you’re not ready to get a dog.
Plenty Of Socializing
We did mention this before but your companions need plenty of socializing if they are going to be happy. While you are your dog’s favorite person in the world, they still need to meet new people or dogs.
Socialization always results in a happier animal. And while some pets hate meeting new friends, dogs are happiest when they have a play date. This is why dog parks are so important. Having a place to go where there are tons of new friends waiting for them to meet goes a long way.
If you want to make your dog happy, then the dog park is probably the best place to go.
Communicate When There’s A Behavior Problem
Behavior problems aren’t anything new. Your companion will show behavior problems from time to time. But you have to approach the issue with extra caution. Dogs aren’t people so yelling at them won’t solve the problem, it will only hide it for some other time.
To solve behavioral problems, you have to communicate with your dog. You have to learn why there’s a problem in the first place and find a solution that will benefit both owner and canine. Behavioral problems exist because your dog tries to tell you something.
While you shouldn’t ignore bad behavior or let your canine be your master, the last thing you’d want is for your dog to be one of those dogs that no one wants to pet or be around. Ignoring the problem turns it into a much larger one. And behavioral issues can turn into much bigger problems if ignored.
There are plenty of ways to look after our dog’s health. But finding ways to look after their mental and physical health goes a long way. Ultimately, you should treat your canine companion the same way you would treat any other soul.
